Click-through rates are collapsing – and hidden inside that is good news for every business with a physical address: Google’s AI answers hit advice content, not local search. If you want to be found where customers actually decide, you are holding the better cards right now. Provided the foundations are in place.
What changed
Google’s AI Mode has been live in Germany since October 2025. According to Sistrix (February 2026), AI Overviews now appear on roughly 20 percent of German search queries – and in almost 80 percent of cases above the organic results. The consequence: position 1 click-through drops from 27 to 11 percent when an AI Overview sits on top. In total, Germany loses about 265 million organic clicks per month.
What matters is how those losses are distributed: informational sites lose up to a quarter of their clicks. Transactional and local queries remain almost untouched. Someone searching for a workshop, a dealership or a hotel does not want an essay – they want a place, a number, an appointment.
The new gap: the Local Pack is not AI search
Visible on Google Maps does not mean visible in AI. A study by Local SEO Data (June 2026) shows: 28.5 percent of businesses ranking in the classic Local Pack do not appear in AI Mode for the same query. Top-3 overlap is just 48 percent. Two systems, one data source – but different selection logic.
That shared data source is your Google Business Profile. According to Whitespark’s Local Search Ranking Factors 2026, profile signals account for roughly a third of local ranking weight, reviews for another fifth. This is where it is decided whether you exist in both worlds – and with “Ask Maps”, Google is bringing AI search directly into Google Maps in the coming months.
The 12-point local visibility check
Work through the list per location – not once per company. Every point can be checked in-house.
- A dedicated Google Business Profile per location – ownership and access rights centrally resolved, no orphaned profiles from former employees or past agencies.
- Primary category chosen correctly – a “car dealer” is not a “car repair shop”. The primary category is the single most important field in the profile.
- Name, address, phone number identical everywhere – website, profile, directories. A real local direct line instead of headquarters.
- Opening hours current, including holidays and seasonal closures – “open at the time of search” is one of the strongest local ranking factors.
- A review process per location: a steady flow of new reviews. Recency beats total count.
- Reply to at least 80 percent of reviews – especially the critical ones.
- A dedicated location page on your website with unique content: team, directions, services. Not the same text five times with the city name swapped.
- Structured data on every location page – LocalBusiness, AutoDealer or Hotel schema.
- Current, real photos that match the category: showroom, workshop, rooms. AI cross-checks image content against the category.
- Services, products and attributes fully maintained – brands, offerings, amenities.
- Actively answer customer questions: maintain the profile’s Q&A and answer the most frequent questions in plain text on the location page.
- The self-test: check your five most important queries per location – in Google, in AI Mode, and in ChatGPT. Local Pack visibility does not guarantee AI visibility.
The special case: multi-location businesses
Dealership and hotel groups rarely fail at one location – they fail at scale. The three most common mistakes: copied location pages whose text differs only in the city name. One central phone number for every branch, stripping the profile of local relevance. And secondary locations whose profiles nobody has touched in years while the flagship gets all the care.
To Google – and to AI – every location is its own business. Treat it that way.
What you can skip
A lot is being sold as “AI SEO” right now. An llms.txt file is almost always part of the package. Google itself calls the standard “purely speculative”; an analysis of over 500 million AI bot visits found a grand total of 408 requests for such files. Invest the time in your Business Profile and your location pages instead. That is where AI actually reads.
Measuring success
Three metrics are enough to start: calls and direction clicks from the Business Profile (export monthly), review momentum per location – and the monthly AI self-test from point 12, documented in a simple spreadsheet. What shows up there, wins. What is missing now knows what to work on.
